Often overlooked “O” Rings

Often overlooked “O” Rings

If you use a folding Bevria cane, you may have noticed the little rubber rings at each joint.
The rubber rings on the joints of a mobility cane are called “O rings”. They serve a few purposes.

1. They help assist in maintaining the stability of the joint, making the joint snug and minimising side to side, or wobbling, movement of the metal sections.

2. They protect the metal joints from compacting, or distorting, by grinding against each other. A cane with missing O rings will tend to be harder to fold up as the joints are no longer protected.

3. They allow for some noise reduction by absorbing vibration and acting as a cushion between the metal sections. and

4. Saves your fingers from some pain if you should get them caught in the joints while folding your cane.

“O” rings will perish over time. Check your cane joints regularly to ensure that they still have “O” rings on them. If they don’t, or if they are close to perishing, they can be replaced by taking the tip off the cane and rolling new “O” rings to the desired joint. O rings come in a variety of different sizes. Bevria canes have 8mm “O” rings.

Note, No all cane manufacturers use “O” rings on their canes. Ambutech canes for example have a different shaped joint to Bevria canes and do not use O rings.

Karyn has “O” rings available and is happy to fit them. If you think you might need new “O” rings please get in touch.
